The Wachau is the name given to the 30 km stretch by the Danube between Melk and Krems where the river cuts a narrow rocky valley between the foothills of the Bohemian Forest to the northwest and the Dunkelsteiner Wald to the southeast. This is an area with impressive vineyards, romantic small towns, castles and monastries. This area was added to the UNESCO list of world heritage sites for outstanding architectural and agricultural history.
On the way to Lake Mondsee we passed by Maria Tefarl, the most scenic spot of the Danube river. Notice the boat which is a full day excursion of the Danube Valley Cruise and Bus Tour from Vienna.
Lake Mondsee, 11km long and over 2km wide is the warmest lake in the Salzkammergut. Around the banks of the lake there is little human habitation. The lake offers facilities for swimming, surfing, sailing, waterskiing, fishing and tennis. We stayed in this spick and span hotel ~ Seepension Hemetsberger and the lady owner, Bettina who greeted us was nice and courteous, always smiling and very pretty too!
This picture was taken from the balcony of my room and it was already in the evening.
Bettina recommended that we go to this Hotel Krone for our dinner which was within walking distance from the hotel.
Schweinsschinitzel ~ my order. This piece is smaller but thicker than what we had at Figlmuller.
These dumplings came with our dishes .......... is it colouring or spinach? Absolutely no idea!
Sunrise at Lake Mondsee ........ very breathtaking scenery and lots of cool, clean, fresh air.
Look at the clear waters, it's just so beautiful and serene. This place is ideal for a relaxing holiday.
Durnstein Castle
Our first stop ..... Durnstein - especially famous, because here King Richard the Lionheart of England was imprisoned, while waiting for his ransom to arrive from England, rasied by his faithful Minstrel Blondel.
Krems ..... heart of the Wachau, an old wine-merchants' town.
Benedictine abbey of Melk, one of Austria's most famous Baroque buildings, which together with the Wachau area, won the award for 'Best Historic Destination of the World' in 2008.
