Once in a while I would like to have a vegetarian meal. What I like most is dishes made with bean curd sheets, 'fu chook' or gluten puffs. I've never been to this restaurant eversince they shifted to this new and bigger place and so last weekend, trotted there to check it out ....... Gui Lin vegetarian restaurant.
We ordered 4 dishes for the three of us and let me introduce them to you, one by one ......
Tidbits made of seaweed, cost 3 rgt and when I asked what it was, ...... the waitress replied that it's their signature seaweed biscuits, and added that they're very nutritious.
My favourite, deep-fried mock goose, see it's half a portion, can you spot the 'wings' at the side? This was totally made of bean curd sheets and there's chilli sauce to go with it. Not garlic chilli sauce, because garlic and onions are not vegetarian in the religious view point. This dish cost 5 rgt.
This is Lemon grass chicken, the chicken pieces were made of gluten puffs and it's slightly spicy, curry leaves were added for extra fragrance, taste wasn't too bad.
Yam rolls ..... yam paste wrapped with bean curd sheets and deep-fried, also served with chilli sauce. The taste was quite alright except that I found the paste to be a little too soft.
Cantonese braised rice vermicelli ..... the rice vermicelli was shallow-fried for a while to give the 'wok' aroma, heaped with a generous serving of oyster sauce gravy with mushrooms, vegetables, black fungus and mock squid, served with pickled green chillies. It wasn't salty enough and we had to drizzle in some light soya sauce.
The last three dishes were 10 rgt each. In fact, from the menu, you'll notice that they only serve one size dishes and the majority of them cost 10 rgt each. Our meal came to 43.80 rgt plus tea.

My daughter & I both love vegetarian food. We're having it at least once a week. I love how they cook these with sweet & sour flavour. But I still think the deep-fried mock goose is pretty oily. I don't really like it! I even make my own vegetarian rendang chicken. Hmm..very delish! The lemon grass chicken sounds very inviting too. Maybe I try that at home someday.
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day!
Cheers, Kristy
is good to have vegetarian dishes once in a while!
ReplyDeleteI have never been to this place coz the rest of the piggy clan doesn't quite fancy vegetarian dishes :p I would love to try this out one day :)
ReplyDeleteI miss this type of vegetarian. it is hard to find it here and not as good.
ReplyDeleteWow....all of them look interesting to me. But looks like that's a lot of gluten you eat. My tummy can't handle that.
ReplyDeleteLooks good! I also like vegetarian food but not my husband. So sometime I take vegetarian food at the foodcourt or hawker centre.

ReplyDeleteI love the vegetarian assam fish curry. Yes the goose is oily, they need to deep-fry it, that's why.
Sonia, totally agree with you!

I prefer 'Chuk Lam', the one at Kampar road, runs by a Buddhist nun. That place is full most of the time.
Mary.
Yes vegetarian food is mostly of wheat flour and bean curd sheet.

Think most husbands are 'meat man', ha, ha! My other half also is not too keen, says it's oily.

ReplyDeleteYes, once in a while ok but must admit it can be a bit oily.
I do not really like vegetarian food when they use too much gluten...

ReplyDeleteHave you been to this place in Melb? Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery, 141 Queen St., They serve tea and food, sometimes the chef is from M'sia. Seems the vegetarian food there is not too bad. Downstairs is art gallery re Buddhism and upstairs is prayer room.
Thank you very much! I will check it out :)
